OnSite Dental DFW: Providing the At Home Dental Care Your Loved One Deserves

 In Uncategorized

Now that you have had a chance to meet our on site mobile dental team headed by Dr. Brandon Trevino, let’s share a little of how we do what we do for the geriatric population of North Texas.

Many of you grew up seeing your mom and dad go to the dentist regularly throughout your lifetime.  They taught you that oral health is important not only for your overall health, but also in maintaining a beautiful smile. At OnSite Dental DFW we want to continue that legacy of care. It brings us great joy to visit your loved one in the comfort of their own home and to bring to them the chairside manner of care they  experienced with their former dentist. As their needs change, so does the manner in which they are cared for. A gentle, caring, understanding chairside manner is now more important than ever, and the staff at OnSite Dental DFW have what it takes!

We start with a listening ear. When you call us to schedule your loved one, you will notice Julie allows you to share important details about them.  Are they coherent or is there a level of dementia or Alzheimer’s?  Are they more alert in the morning or the afternoon?  Are they having pain or is this visit for a dental cleaning and check up?  Would you like to be present or is there a care giver you’d like us to keep in the loop?  What is your main focus or goal for your mom or dad in this time of their life? This is all valuable information that helps paint a picture of what is most important to you in your loved ones oral health journey.  We know it brings a certain level of comfort to you when you are given the time to make your concerns known. Julie is great at transferring those details to the rest of the staff, assuring you always that your loved one is in the best hands possible.

When we first meet your geriatric loved one in their home, assisted living community, or in their memory care community, we quickly assess not only how they present dentally, but Dr. Trevino and staff take into account where they present in their physical and metal health as well. The details you provide along with our assessment plays into the tailored care we can provide for them. We can deliver at home dental care in many ways. We always aim for x-rays, be it a full mouth set, or possibly only in the areas that are of concern. This is an important step in educating you about the current status of their oral health. We have learned many techniques over the years and many families are astonished that we can obtain them. In the event your loved one simply won’t allow them, it doesn’t stop us from continuing their care.

If you had a chance to read about our hygienist Jade, you will have gathered she is passionate about caring for your geriatric loved one. Keeping them comfortable while providing a great dental cleaning is what she does best.  Playing music in the background, talking to them about their day, customizing how she delivers their cleaning is all a part of what she does best. Julie shares the details of the beginning conversations with Jade prior to the visit so she can go into treating your loved one in the manner that fits them best. For many we can use our powered Piezo unit, much like your hygienist may use at your cleanings. Or, if your loved one has restrictions with swallowing or is reclined in a bed bound setting, we can hand scale gently yet thoroughly, which is what many of them will remember from their former dental cleanings. Either way, they are going to get the best cleaning which is what they deserve!

The follow up exam will always be with Dr. Trevino. He is the owner and sole dentist at OnSite Dental DFW. Julie will be there to assist him as well, again sharing details from the initial phone call and also the details from their cleaning. Keeping him up to date on these issues allows him to  know your loved one before he even meets them!  We feel this small company atmosphere, a team of three, is vital in maintaining good communication so your desires and concerns for your loved one are not forgotten or overlooked. During the exam Dr. Trevino will evaluate any x-rays we have obtained, assess their physical health along with their mental health, and carefully devise a plan that will help maintain the good teeth they have, and either repair or remove the teeth that are posing problems. Once this plan is in place Julie will call you once again to go over his recommendations and answer any questions and/or concerns you have.

Our favorite saying to the families of our patients is that we are here to do as much, or as little, as you would have us to do. It all starts with educating you on the status of their oral health, and then listening to your desires for their care. We strive to keep you up to date and involved with each step of their care. It’s our way of caring for you while you are caring for them.
